Iraq Requests U.S. Helicopters, Munitions
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Iraq plans to expand its helicopter fleet with
U.S.-origin platforms and advanced munitions.
Iraq has requested options on attack helicopters and advanced munitions
in an effort to turn the air force into a lethal military arm. Officials
said the project would reduce Iraqi dependence on the U.S.-led coalition for
air power.
On July 30, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of
the Iraqi request for $2.4 billion worth of attack helicopters and
munitions. DSCA said Iraq would select either 24 Bell Armed 407 or 24
AH-6 helicopters. The AH-6 has been produced by Boeing.
