U.S. Says Iran Could Overpower BMD
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The U.S. intelligence community, in a significant
assessment revision, has determined that Iran's ballistic missile arsenal
could overcome American missile defense systems.
Officials said the intelligence community has concluded that Iran was
building missiles at an unexpectedly rapid pace. They said an Iranian attack
against NATO or other European states could overwhelm any land-based missile
defense system.
"The intelligence community now assesses that the threat from Iran's
short- and medium-range ballistic missiles, such as the Shihab-3, is
developing more rapidly than previously projected," Defense Secretary Robert
Gates said.
