YEMEN DISCUSSES AIRCRAFT, SAM BUY FROM RUSSIA

MOSCOW [MENL] -- Yemen has been examining the prospect of purchasing a wide range of offensive and defensive military platforms from Russia.

The discussions took place during the recent visit by President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who met his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Russian government sources said that in April the two men discussed Sanaa's plans to modernize its military with new Russian-origin fighter-jets, anti-aircraft and ground-based systems. In all, the value of the proposed purchase would reach $700 million.

The sources said Saleh has expressed interest in the advanced S-300 air defense system. The S-300 is a long-range surface-to-air missile system that can be modified for missile defense missions.

So far, no Arab League state has procured the S-300. Both Iran and Syria have expressed interest, but U.S. pressure as well as pricing disputes blocked the deals.
