IRAQ TRAINS NEW AIR FORCE

BAGHDAD [MENL] -- Iraq has begun training its new air force.

Officials said Iraqi pilots have been undergoing training at a military helicopter flight school in Jordan. Over the weekend, 19 Iraqis completed a helicopter flight course in Jordan.

The pilots would fly U.S.-origin helicopters later in 2004. Officials said the pilots had served in the air force under the Saddam Hussein regime.

Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, deputy director of coalition operations, said the Iraqi pilots received training in democratic leadership as part of their new duties. Kimmitt said the graduates would form the core of the new Iraqi air force.
