TURKEY PLANS TO BUY ADVANCED F-16s

ANKARA [MENL] -- Turkey plans to procure advanced F-16 multi-role fighters from the United States.

Officials said the Turkish Air Force Command and the Defense Industry Undersecretariat have decided to purchase 30 new F-16s from Lockheed Martin. They said the purchase would maintain Turkey's combat air fleet until the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter becomes available for export in 2014.

Officials said an agreement with the Bush administration could be reached by the end of 2006. They estimated the purchase of the Block 52+ aircraft at $1.5 billion.

The Block 52+ has been regarded as the latest model of the F-16. In 2005, Turkey's neighbor and rival, Greece, ordered 30 such aircraft in a $1.99 billion deal.
