SAUDIS, TURKEY EXPLORE DEFENSE DEALS

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Saudi Arabia and Turkey have been exploring the prospect of defense cooperation that would include arms sales.

Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul discussed cooperation with Saudi Arabia during his visit to Riyad on May 29. Gonul met Saudi Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz, who is also the kingdom's defense minister, on ways to strengthen cooperation.

"The talks focused on the latest global developments and ways of strengthening bilateral cooperation," the Saudi Defense Ministry said.

Under the pro-Islamic government of Prime Minister Recep Erdogan, Turkey has sought to increase defense and military relations to Gulf Arab states. Turkey has offered to transfer production facilities to Gulf Cooperation Council countries as part of major weapons deals.
