IRAN SEEKS TO DENY U.S. BASES IN C. ASIA

NICOSIA [MENL] -- Iran has sought to deny Central Asian military bases to the United States.

Iranian sources said Teheran's effort was meant to block a U.S. strike from such countries as Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan. Both countries were used in the U.S.-led war against Afghanistan in 2001.

Officials said Iran has raised the prospect of funding and defense cooperation to several key Central Asian states. They said Iranian delegations have been visiting these countries with offers of weapons shipments, training and help in energy.

On June 2, Iran and Kazakhstan discussed defense cooperation. Kazakh Defense Minister Daniyal Akhmetov met Iranian ambassador to Astana, Ramin Memhanparast, in a session that reviewed defense and military cooperation.
