INTERPOL DISCUSSES GULF SECURITY

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Interpol, launching an effort to enhance regional security, plans to provide Gulf Cooperation Council states access to the organization's vast counter-insurgency database.

On Monday, Interpol, or the International Criminal Police Organization, began its first meeting for regional bureau chiefs in the United Arab Emirates capital of Abu Dhabi. Officials said the meeting of Middle East and North Africa bureau chiefs sought to draft a security program for the next year.

Officials said Interpol chiefs were discussing crisis management and major security events. They said participants would also review the development of an Interpol database for insurgency and organized crime.

The three-day Interpol meeting was being attended by 17 countries. The meeting, facilitated by the UAE Interior Ministry, sought to follow up on Interpol's gathering in Qatar in 2006.
