ISRAEL PREPARES MINI-UAV TENDER

TEL AVIV [MENL] -- The Israel Army was preparing to issue a tender for a miniature unmanned aerial vehicle.

The competition was expected to attract bids from the three largest defense companies in Israel. At this point, Elbit Systems, with the Skylark mini-UAV, was regarded as the frontrunner.

The Ground Forces Command has sought to equip each of its 70 infantry battalions with a mini-UAV system. The tender, prepared by the Defense Ministry, was expected to implement procurement and deployment in stages.

In 2005, GFC selected Skylark for a pilot mini-UAV project. Elbit Systems provided at least four Skylark systems, deployed during the war in Lebanon in mid-2006.
