TEL AVIV [MENL] -- The Israel Army was preparing to issue a tender for a
miniature unmanned aerial vehicle.The competition was expected to attract bids from the three largest
defense companies in Israel. At this point, Elbit Systems, with the Skylark
mini-UAV, was regarded as the frontrunner.The Ground Forces Command has sought to equip each of its 70 infantry
battalions with a mini-UAV system. The tender, prepared by the Defense
Ministry, was expected to implement procurement and deployment in stages.In 2005, GFC selected Skylark for a pilot mini-UAV project. Elbit
Systems provided at least four Skylark systems, deployed during the war in
Lebanon in mid-2006.
