WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The Bush administration has been pressing Congress not
to block a proposed U.S. sale of advanced air-to-ground munitions to Saudi
Arabia.Officials said State Department and Defense Department officials have
been briefing House and Senate committees on plans to sell the Joint Direct
Attack Munitions to the Royal Saudi Air Force. They said the administration
message was that the JDAM sale marked a test of U.S.-Saudi relations amid
threats from neighboring Iran."The Saudis want action not just words," an official said. "Their
planes mean nothing unless they have advanced munitions."JDAM, produced by Boeing, converts a general purpose bomb into a smart
munition. So far, Israel has been the only U.S. ally in the Middle East to
receive JDAM.
