JORDAN BATTLES ISLAMIST MILITIA

AMMAN [MENL] -- Jordan has been battling efforts by the Islamic opposition to establish a militia.

Jordanian authorities have been arresting members of the Islamic Action Front, aligned with the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, on charges of establishing a militia. The IAF members were said to have sought to employ the militia to destabilize the Hashemite kingdom.

So far, at least nine IAF members have been arrested, most of them residents of the northeastern city of Zarqa. The Islamic movement, which has also formed ties to Iran, has denied the allegations.

Officials have acknowledged the arrest of IAF members on charges of threatening Jordan's national security. They said authorities were investigating IAF activities, including the establishment of a militia.
