TURKEY ESTABLISHES 3 SECURITY ZONES

ANKARA [MENL] -- Turkey's military has established three zones along the Iraqi border to prevent infiltration by the Kurdish Workers Party.

The military's General Staff deemed three provinces interim security zones as PKK attacks have increased in southeastern Turkey. Officials said the zones in the Hakkari, Sirnak and Sirt provinces would be maintained over the next three months.

"This practice is a usual method continuously applied in line with military requirements and therefore, any misinterpretation of the measure is not reflecting the truth of the matter," the General Staff said.

The security zones were established as Turkey has gathered 60,000 troops along the Iraqi border. The military plans to maintain most of the forces in Hakkari, Sirnak and Sirt until Sept. 9.
