ISRAEL LAUNCHES SPY SATELLITE

TEL AVIV [MENL] -- Israel has launched an advanced spy satellite.

The state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries has launched Ofeq-7, an advanced reconnaissance facility with a high resolution capability of less than 0.5 meters. Ofeq-7 was launched westward from Israel on Monday, and was said to have reached an altitude of 600 kilometers that would place the facility in a low-earth orbit.

"This adds an important layer to Israel's defense," Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz said.

Ofeq-7, launched at 2:40 a.m. from the Israel Air Force base at Palmahim, was manufactured by IAI and contains a camera payload of Elbit Systems's El-Op Electro-Optics subsidiary. The satellite joins Ofeq-5, which has been operating in space since 2002.
