BAHRAIN: SHI'ITE RIOTS ORCHESTRATED

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Bahrain has concluded that the Shi'ite riots in the Gulf Arab kingdom were organized with help from Iran.

Officials said the Interior Ministry has assessed that the nightly Shi'ite clashes with police and security forces around Manama have been orchestrated. They said Shi'ite agitators were being trained and directed by foreign elements, including operatives aligned with Iran.

"We are sure they [the rioters] cannot be acting on their own, but it is a matter of investigation to find out exactly who they [instigators] are," Capt. Rashid Bu Najma, a staffer at the Interior Ministry's legal affairs department, said on June 9.

Officials said the riots have become bloody, with Shi'ites using firebombs and homemade weapons that could kill or maim police. They said the Shi'ites have also organized squads to monitor police activity and ambush patrols.
