GERMANY DONATES 2 NAVY BOATS TO LEBANON

LONDON [MENL] -- Germany has donated two patrol boats to the Lebanese Navy.

The boats were handed over in a ceremony on June 8 in Beirut attended by the German Foreign Ministry and the Lebanese government. Officials said the Lebanese Navy would use the vessels for maritime security missions amid the insurrection by the Al Qaida-aligned Fatah Al Islam in the north.

Officials said the two unidentified vessels came from German Navy surplus. Germany has commanded the maritime element of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.

"The vessels from the German fleet are to help Lebanon monitor its borders independently," the German Foreign Ministry said.
