WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The Iraq Army and police were said to be ready to
assume a greater share of the security burden.Officials said Iraqi security units were capable of taking over
responsibilities from the U.S.-led coalition. They said the Iraqi army and
police, however, remain hampered by poor logistics and government."My overall assessment is that many units, especially the Iraqi army
units, have become increasingly proficient and have demonstrated both their
improved capability and resolve in battle," Lt. Gen. Martin Dempsey,
outgoing commander of the U.S.-led training program of the Iraqi forces,
said.In testimony to the House Armed Services Oversight Subcommittee on
Tuesday, Dempsey said Iraq's army and police remain hampered by lack of
depth and shortage of commanders. He said Iraqi security forces, with
attrition rates of between 15 and 22 percent, remain undermanned in face of
the Sunni insurgency.
