LEBANON MULLS BUYING RUSSIAN WEAPONS

NICOSIA [MENL] -- Lebanon has been examining the procurement of Russian weapons in the effort to quell an Al Qaida-aligned insurrection in the north.

Officials said the Lebanese government of Prime Minister Fuad Siniora has approved talks with Moscow for surplus platforms from the Russian Army. They said the approval came after the United States and other NATO allies delayed weapons deliveries pledged over the last year.

"We need weapons and we need them fast," an official said. "We're ready to examine every offer."

Russia has acknowledged the offer to Lebanon. But Moscow did not specify the weapons available for sale.
