ABU DHABI [MENL] -- The Saudi-led ArabSat consortium has signed contracts
for its next two communications satellites.A consortium of EADS Astrium and Thales Alenia Space has been
constructing the satellites for ArabSat. Executives said Astrium would
supply and integrate payloads on the Eurostar E-3000 satellites. Thales
Alenia Space has been designing the communications payloads."The introduction of the first-ever in orbit hot back-up in the MENA
region, as well as Ka-band, will allow us to offer to our customers an
unprecedented level and unrivalled range of services," ArabSat president
Khalid Balkheyour said.On June 16, ArabSat signed a contract with EADS-Astrium and Thales
Alenia Space to build the first two of its fifth- generation satellites.
Contracts were also signed with International Launch Services and France's
Arianespace for the launch of these satellites between the third quarter of
2009 and first quarter of 2010.
