AL QAIDA REFRAINS FROM SEA MISSIONS

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Al Qaida was said to have reduced or suspended maritime operations in the Gulf.

Saudi Arabia has reported no Al Qaida operations in the Gulf or Arabian Sea. Saudi officials said the kingdom as well as other Gulf Cooperation Council states have significantly bolstered patrols in their territorial waters over the last two years.

"Sea activity is limited, particularly in dangerous areas," Lt. Talal Anqawi, director-general of the Saudi Border Guard, said. "There are areas where it is completely banned and other locations where there are fears that such action would take place."

Anqawi, speaking on the sidelines of sidelines of a three-day maritime security conference in Jedda in late May, said his department has not detected what he termed terrorist sea-borne. He said security was bolstered by both governments and shipping companies.
