GCC ARMY CHIEFS MULL EXERCISES

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- The Gulf Cooperation Council has sought to launch an intensive training regimen to enhance regional security.

GCC army chiefs have been meeting to discuss a schedule of regional ground force exercises. Officials said the exercises were meant to facilitate joint operations and enhance border security.

On Tuesday, the six GCC army chiefs met at headquarters in Khafer Baaten near Riyad. This was the seventh meeting of GCC land force commanders, and included senior field officers.

GCC militaries held their largest exercise in Oman in 2007 as part of an effort to improve regional security. Officials said additional exercises would take place over the next year.
