.....Middle East states have launched an examination of a new Russian
air-to-air missile approved for export. The Russian government of President
Vladimir Putin has approved the export of the R-27P air-to-air missile, said
to have no equivalent in the West. The missile has been regarded as one of
the most advanced in Russia's air force and has long been denied to
Moscow's clients in the Middle East. Russian industry sources said Iran and
Syria have expressed interest in the long-range R-27P Vympel. The AAM has
been deployed on the MiG-29 and Su-27 fighter-jets deployed by Russia.
REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS
The United States has relayed a pledge that it will not
establish military bases in Cyprus as part of a solution to reunite the
island.
But Turkish diplomatic sources said the U.S. Defense Department has been
discussing the expansion of the U.S. military presence in Cyprus to convert
the island into a listening post for the U.S. intelligence community. The
sources said the U.S. offer was part of a proposed arrangement in which
Washington would begin formal assistance to the Turkish Republic of Northern
Cyprus.
SAUDI ARABIA
A U.S. government panel has again urged that Saudi
Arabia be deemed eligible for sanctions that could halt military sales to
the Arab kingdom.
The Commission on International Religious Freedom urged that Saudi
Arabia be designated a "country of particular concern." The designation
has been reserved for those states regarded as the worst violators of
religious freedom.
TURKEY
Turkey has launched efforts to advance military cooperation with India.
Turkish leaders have discussed defense and military cooperation with an
Indian delegation led by Chief of Staff Adm. Madhvendra Singh in what could
mark a change of policy by Ankara. Ankara has pursued defense and military
cooperation with India's neighbor and rival, Pakistan.
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
The United Arab Emirates prepares to complete new
facilities for its new F-16E/F multi-role fighters.
The UAE has been constructing and modernizing two air force bases to
house the F-16 Block 60 aircraft. The first F-16, one of 80 ordered, was
scheduled to arrive in the UAE by the end of 2004.
