Greece is reviewing its military and defense doctrine. This could prompt the
revival of major weapons deals suspended in early 2001 amid mounting fiscal
woes. Unlike other NATO allies, Greece has no qualms over purchasing Russian
weaponry and has purchased the S-300 anti-aircraft missile and other
equipment from Moscow.Greece's biggest military headache continues to be neighboring Turkey. The
two countries are starting to cooperate on security issues but remain far
apart on such long-standing questions as the future of Cyprus and the
Aegean. But they are cooperating on the issue of illegal immigration, a
growing problem for Turkey amid the war in Afghanistan.Greece is also restructing its state-owned defense industries. Athens has sold Greece's largest shipyard and plans other sales of state-owned defense factories. A continuing source of tension is Greece's relations with the
United States. Athens has not moved quickly in the battle of terrorism,
particularly against the November 19 organization, which has claimed
responsibility for numerous attacks on U.S. nationals and facilities.
