More than a decade after the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait, the sheikdom is
besieged by renewed threats from Baghdad. The threats have also included
border incursions and attacks from Iraqi troops. The military has been on
heightened alert and is cooperating with U.S. forces in the country. The
U.S. military has helped train Kuwaiti troops in a range of techniques,
including fighting amid a nonconventional weapons attack.Kuwait does not have plans to purchase major arms systems. Instead, the
sheikdom has been selective in arms purchases and has often chosen to
bolster political partners by buying their weapons. These include purchases
of the Amoun air defense system from Egypt and weapons from Pakistan.
