Qatar is refurbishing its security forces in the aftermath of the Islamic
suicide attacks on the United States in September 2001. The emirate is
obtaining training and equipment from its leading ally, France. Military
procurement is expected to remain limited after a period of rapid growth
during the mid-1990s. Military personnel have grown by a third since 1994
while combat vessels have risen from three in 1995 to seven three years
later. The biggest change in the military has been the addition of 10 AMX-30
main battle tanks and the delivery of 12 Mirage 2000-5 combat aircraft .
Qatar has sought to reduce tensions with its neighbors. It settled a border
dispute with Bahrain and has launched similar efforts with Saudi Arabia.
