Tunisia

Tunisia's efforts to modernize its military have been suspended. The country
has not completed any significant weapons deliveries over the last decade.
An exception was the delivery of M-109 self-propelled artillery pieces from
the United States, which also grants financial aid to Tunis. The size of the
armed forces has remained stable at about 35,000 while a lack of spare parts
and maintenance has led to a sharp drop in the number of tanks. Tunis is
investing in internal security, fearing critics of the regime and Islamic
insurgency.
